About the Artist :: Sarah Chase

The majority of my paintings focus on the beauty and sensuality of two subject matters: the human body and organic botanical forms.

The human form allows me immense artistic freedom in the manipulation of both technical composition and emotional content, as well as merging hyperrealism with expressionistic freedom. I have moved away from psychological expressionism over the past few years, but am now beginning to revive my expressionist roots when I feel it will enhance a specific painting, as I endeavor to reveal emotional truths beneath cultural facades.

Botanical forms, inherently free of the defining connotations associated with the human form, allow for interpretations on a purely physical level, as well as a symbolic one.  The symbolic use of their sensual forms has transcended cultures and generations.  Botanical forms have served as symbols of romance, female sexuality, and even feminism.  My goal is to look beyond the culturally memorized symbol of these forms to the individual and unique beauty of each flower.  Enlarging portions of botanical forms, and translating them from life to a painted image, allows the viewer to focus on the innate and sensual beauty therein.
